Day 5 – Outside Fort Pulaski

The battle scars of Fort Pulaski

The battle scars of Fort Pulaski

We circled the exterior of the fort, to inspect the scars left by the barrage of cannon on its brick walls – the collapsed southern corner had been rebuilt – it had been reduced to rubble – but the lesser holes, each the size of waste can or larger – remained as testament to the battle.  Overgrown swampy fields and forests marked the splendid isolation that this fort now enjoyed, all but hidden from the river it once guarded.

Once that was done, we resumed our drive to St. Augustine, by way of the Harry S. Truman Parkway – which revealed yet another bug in the GPS – it was not aware it existed, so for a while we were driving high over roadless swamp and river on the map.
