At first glance, you might think the easy way to go south from New England is to simply follow Interstate 95. And it does go through Bridgeport. But our trick is to set the GPS to take us toward Nyack, New York – which takes you well north of New York City’s chronic congestion and across the towering Tappan Zee Bridge on the Hudson, where great cliffs seem to guard the westward shore from some imagined invader. There are plenty of filling stations after Nyack to pause to refuel, restock, and reset the GPS to our true destination in distant Virginia.
The was a driving day through and through; New York gave way to New Jersey, across the Delaware Bridge into Delaware, Maryland, and finally – a roadblock in Washington D.C. which was even worse than the gridlock one hears about in Congress.
