The park, which was designed by the same architect who designed Central Park is under total reconstruction; to wit, massive areas have been fenced off, ripped up, and then left idle at the edge of one of Nature’s wonders without regards to visitors who will arrive to visit this spectacle once in their lifetime. It is still possible to view the falls, but doing so is difficult.

We found our way down the proper dead end, hemmed in by a rickety chain link fence to one side and the Maid of the Mist gift shop and other sundry ticket-access places on the other. The roar of the crowd, combined with the sudden appearance of a Sheriff’s helicopter buzzing the falls and gorge was enough to drown out the ancient roar of the falls; we can say we have seen the spectacle now, but enjoying the scene as one could enjoy the views of Bryce or Old Faithful is a different matter.
