We departed Detroit for Freemont, Ohio to visit the President Hays Library.
It was quite a contrast to prior homes we had visited.
The house sits within a triangular park – once his estate – that covers 25 acres of land, and is filled with towering trees that are spaced out upon a level grassy area. Along one side lies an old Indian trail and military road, near the Presidential gravesite, but the park centers upon the massive house, and the imposing library.
Purpose-built to house his papers, the library is our first stop of the day, we find we are just in time for a house tour. So we take it. A good thing too, since the next house tour was rather large, with a dozen people, including two screaming hyperactive kids. For our tour, it is just the three of us.
