Day 19 – A detour west

The Mississippi River as we cross the first – newer – bridge.

At Layton Iowa we cross the river on one of the bridges crossing this watery barrier. The first bridge goes easily across the river to an island, the second bridge is a relic undergoing repair – a grey steel monstrosity with open steel grid decking. The longer we wait at the stoplight for cars that never cross the span, the more nervous Trixie gets about the structure’s integrity and the odds of getting across the river.

As these are old open grid deck bridges, Trixie immediately worms herself into he Mum’s lap in the front seat as Pops carefully drives across the long, narrow, noisy bridge. The light finally turns green before she demands we turn around, and we cross the bridge safely, to find that it doesn’t really join with a proper road, but dead-ends into an awkward T intersection on the Iowa side’s road that follows the river.

Luckily the GPS gets us going in the right direction, and before we know it we arrive at the enigmatic Effigy Mounds.
