Day 18 – Returning to De Smet

The Laura Ingalls Museum in De Smet

The Laura Ingalls Museum in De Smet

We backtrack from Brookings to De Smet to view the houses of the Laura Ingalls society, a local historic association that is fortunate enough to have preserved buildings associated with the famous author. Even more fortunate, we arrive in time for the first guided tour, although photos are forbidden in some homes.

The first stop is the Surveyor’s House where the family spent the first winter in the area; it fits the descriptions to a T, as the guide explains the house in painstaking detail, from the bedroom and stairs to the pantry and lean-too. It is a modest sized dwelling – but enormous compared to a sod house or the original portion of the later house built on the Ingalls homestead.
