Day 17 – Visiting a school

The old schoolhouse on the prairie

The old schoolhouse on the prairie

We go on to the barn, where a foal is playing with its mare tied to a windmill that is oddly still despite the breeze. Here children are given rides on the horses, and after a time a ‘covered wagon’ drawn by two mules takes us out across the field to the schoolhouse, one of many one-room schoolhouses that once dotted the landscapes, for a ‘lesson’.

While attempting to recreate the Ingalls era, few of these things other than the land under our feet have anything to do with the author, but overall the effort is very well done, and it was well worth the effort to visit the site.
