Day 17 – Morning in the Badlands

A Morning Moon in the Badlands

A Morning Moon in the Badlands

We awake early enough to try and catch the murky sunrise within the Badlands Park; a drive later, we are in the park, admiring the moon over the weirdly colored peaks and landforms, awaiting the sunrise – which is hopelessly obscured by low clouds to the east. After waiting and walking about the quiet grave-like mounds, and vast grasslands, we return to the hotel, have a quick bite to eat from our provisions since breakfast is not free, and drive off to our next stops on this epic journey.

It is worth noting that at this point of our trek, we are close to the North American “Pole of inaccessibility” that is, we are as far away from any ocean as we will get in North America – over 1,000 miles!  The actual pole site is quite a bit to the south of Interior, near a town called Allen.
