Day 16 – Fossils of the Badlands

The peaks and plateaus of the Badlands

The peaks and plateaus of the Badlands

With the Fossil site, we encounter a discouraging sight – parents and children scrambling all over these cliffs and mounds as if it were a playground, ignoring signs that say stay on the boardwalk, and other signs warning of rattlesnakes. A sad sight indeed.

The eastern end of the park is the more ‘developed’ part, and has a higher concentration of strangely shaped formations and parking areas to view them. It also takes us from the higher side of the park on the north, where the road rides atop the grassy ridge tops to the lower side, where the road snakes down among the strange spires and shapes of the shifting landscape.
