We pass Mount Rushmore close to noon after that unfortunate detour, and make our way through the scenic valleys and notches of the Black Hills to Rapid City for fuel, lunch and better roads. Then onto Wall.
Wall, South Dakota sits on the intersection leading to the west entry of the Badlands. It is also home to an iconic tourist trap known as Walls Drug Store, whose billboards clutter the prairie for miles outside of Rapid City. The place fills up at least a block of the city, and has a Hampton Beach atmosphere, without the beach – there is even a bus drop off for the place. We venture in Entry Door #4 and look around before beating a hasty retreat to the car, and drive due south to the less crowded confines of the Badlands. As a result, we miss seeing the elusive Jackalope on site, a legendary rabbit with antlers.
