Day 16 – Threading the Needles

The narrow tunnel at the Eye of the Needle formation.

The narrow tunnel at the Eye of the Needle formation.

The twisting road takes us around and around through mind-numbing switchbacks lacking guard rails, steep inclines and through tunnels barely large enough to take one car – on a two-way road.  Trixie hid her head in the backseat as we drove through some of the worst little tunnels.

One scenic wonder, the eye of the needle, is spoiled by idiot tourists parking and blocking a nerve-wracking narrow passage as their hellspawn crawl on the rotting granite cadaver for a carefully posed photo while we try to get out, and crazed drivers try to get in.

Eventually we exit the long narrow road, and resume our drive in an easterly direction through the better roads that run past Mount Rushmore.
