Day 15 – Crazy Horse Memorial

The incomplete Crazy Horse Memorial

The incomplete Crazy Horse Memorial

The Crazy Horse Visitor’s center is a long twisted line of six connected structures, looking out across a vast flat plain that will become a Native American university, airport and cultural center in the shadow of the finished sculpture – an audacious plan by any measure, and one that appears to be long in the coming, since only the face and outstretched arm are complete – roughed in, and awaiting completion.

The museum is a long and welcome change of pace, and it puts the one in Washington DC to shame; artifacts from all tribes are on display, but the subtle emphasis is always on the memorial outside.
