Looking up from the Presidential Trail
The first part of the trail is easy and handicap-accessible – but a long hike, with rewarding views of the monument towering high above. The last half is a set of stairs, which requires a fair amount of hiking before Pops reached the sculptor’s studio where the final models of what the monument might have looked like reside. Even at a reduced scale, they are a massive sight.
With that, Pops returned to the modern visitor’s center, passing on stone stairs what must have been the original visitor’s center, now a relic framed in with stone, empty of all but two fireplaces and memorial tablets.
