We only explore a fraction of the huge site before we turn around to go. We stop to view the black-tailed prairie dogs in their habitat below the summit of the tower, and then stop at the trading post outside the gate. It is a consummate tourist trap with trinkets of every type to cater to any taste, from tourists to motorcycle riders.
With that, we drive towards Spearfish, South Dakota to spend the night in possibly the best hotel we have been in thus far. This Best Western is well located, and has doors to an interior hallway and to the outside on the first floor – and the breakfast area was a short way from the room.
