Day 14: Shell Canyon

A panoramic view of the observation platform, the chasm, and Shell Creek Falls

Shell Canyon takes us back a few million years – it begins as a narrow gash in an unyielding wall of rock, where the Shell River has sliced through millions of years of fossilized sediments. They lay open like layered pages in a book, dusty and worn. Our first stop is by the raging river that pours thought the crack, before going on, pausing perhaps too often at the scenic spots – there are plenty of them – until we reach the visitor’s center with its rest room and trail that goes out on a point overlooking a massive waterfall cascading down into a chasm easily six stories deep.
