Day 13: Eastern Yellowstone

The dead forests on the eastern side of Yellowstone

The eastern side of Yellowstone we see is less developed – there are stops along the lake, such as Mary’s Bay, the site of an ancient steam explosion, and Steamboat Point, where hot springs can be heard bubbling far below.

Dead forests stand tall, all grey and silver in the dimming day’s light as we go along.  Unlike the western areas where we would see buffalo and birds, this rugged landscape is lonely and abandoned in the shadows of the steep mountains that form a wall between us and Cody.
