Day 12: Arriving in Montana

Driving down to Gardner Montana

Driving down to Gardner Montana

After ascending the northern edge of the Yellowstone caldera, we got past the Mammoth Hot Springs, a bone-white set of mounds and staircases, stained with the colorful streaks of extremeophile bacteria. The skies, clouding in at this point, give the region a surreal look that is caught between Dante’s dreamland and a hazy reality of yellow cliffs that lead down another chasm to our destination in Montana far below.

We descend yet another dizzying road into Gardner, late, and after checking with Trixie’s boy yet again, turn in for the night at the Super 8 on the ‘river’ side – never mind the river is behind a grocery store, a church and other buildings across the street.
