Day 9: Arriving at Bryce Canyon

Approaching Bryce Canyon from the east.

Approaching Bryce Canyon from the east.

We make it to Bryce Canyon City, unwittingly dashing through a corner of the park in our anxiousness to find a place to dine and to get to the hotel – it has been a long drive. The city is a company town of sorts, owned by someone named Ruby – The hotel, restaurant, shops, entertainment, gas is all branded by that name – and sitting astride the only road into Bryce it is impossible to avoid. We pass through the circus, and venture a little into Bryce Canyon National Park, which is open 24/7 it seems.

After getting our bearings, we return to the hotel, check in, and after perusing the massive shop for provisions, we retire for the night in the Lake Lodge with views of a large pond, and a sunset enjoyed while eating Hot Pockets for dinner, since the restaurant is choked full of anxious hungry tourists disgorged from the tour busses.
