We drive on to Capitol Reef – so named because the spires and domes look like they belong in a capitol, and the range of mountains acted like a reef does – a barrier to overland traffic. This is part of a massive exposed fault in the Earth’s surface, where the land uplifted until weird shapes that look almost like a ruined city of skyscrapers, massive pointed grey fins erupting out of the bases of sheer walls, where the cracks look like crumbling brick walls.

Only a few hearty souls tried their hand out here – and a handful of dusty abandoned buildings or trailer park trash heaps show how few actually succeeded.
