Day 8: Racing the sun

The most unexpected arch seen at Arches.

The most unexpected arch seen at Arches.

Driving on, we are in a race with the sunset – thank goodness for long summer days! At Skyline Arch we witness a persistent double rainbow that lingers on and on, lasting from there to the Devil’s Garden and back to the Sandstone Arch. There is a smattering of rain as we depart, adding to the contrasts of dark clouds with a streak of lightening ahead to the brilliantly illuminated ridges of stone to the north.

Everywhere, the park has these broad flat expanses of sand and stone, filled with a lingering collection of green plants eking out an existence and dominated by lonely towering hoodoos that abruptly rise up like forests of splintered stone. As you drive across one rolling hill after another.

We make it back to Moab as the sky turns to dusk, and after dinner at we turn into the Motel Six and go to bed well after 9:00 – our latest day yet.
