The next morning, Pops beat the sunrise – just barely – and took a number of shots from the top of the dune. After picking up breakfast from Peppercorn’s – the fine restaurant at the hotel – we packed up, checked out and began driving north.

We returned to the First Flight Park to drive around Kill Devil Hill – good thing too, since there was a statue behind it that reproduced the first flight seen in that famous old photograph – even the photographer was included in the life sized bronzed diorama. One has to wonder what the brothers – and the crew of the life saving station – would have thought of this homage put in place a century after the event.
